In a gripping final round at the 88th Masters Tournament, Scottie Scheffler emerged victorious, securing his second green jacket. The sun-drenched Augusta National Golf Club witnessed Scheffler’s sensational play as he pulled away from the chasing pack. Scottie Scheffler, the world number one and reigning Players champion, showcased his dominance with a masterful performance. His final-round score of 68 left him at an impressive 11-under par, sealing the title. Scheffler’s consistent play and clutch shots on the back nine proved decisive over a field of challengers that pressed him early in the tournament.
In a post-round interview, Scheffler expressed his emotions: “I did my best to stay calm, tried to stay patient. I made some key shots and putts. Ludvig played great, but I was fortunate to hold him off. It was a nice feeling to hit a really well-struck shot on the 9th hole.”
Ludvig Åberg, making his major-championship debut, finished an impressive second. His jaw-dropping birdie putt on the 9th hole ignited his charge. Åberg’s fearless play kept the pressure on Scheffler, but ultimately, the Texan’s brilliance prevailed.
Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, and Max Homa shared third place at 4-under par. Morikawa’s steady play ensured he remained on the podium, while Fleetwood and Homa fought valiantly to stop atop the leaderboard.
Neal Shipley, the low amateur, had a memorable day playing alongside Tiger Woods. Shipley cherished the experience, saying, “It’s a day I’m going to cherish forever. To have all the patrons rooting for both of us was phenomenal. This week will be one of the best weeks of my life.”
Tiger impressed on Thursday and Friday, easily making the cut and pacing star golfers like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Hideki Matsuyama going into the weekend. His play around the green was superb while his accuracy and distance with the driver and irons was surprisingly average for a weathered Tiger Woods. Despite falling apart on the weekend, Tiger showed he still possesses the ability and mentality to compete with the field albeit his days of finishing on top seem far in the rearview mirror.
As the sun sets on the 2024 Masters, golf fans eagerly await next year’s edition. The top 12 finishers, including Scheffler and Åberg, have earned a return trip to Augusta National. Looking ahead to the rest of the golf season, Scottie is in prime contention to compete for the elusive Grand Slam of major tournament wins. Regardless of the outcome of the rest of the year, the green jacket remains Scheffler’s to savor until next year.
