A 7-year-old girl was killed by an illegal immigrant in a drunk driving accident. Joel Enrique Gonzalez Chacin was arrested back in June for assault, but was released in September. That assault was on his own family member, and he spent 113 days behind bars.
Now he is charged with the intoxicated manslaughter if 7-year-old Ivory Smith. Her mother, Christina Quainoo was also in the vehicle and was seriously injured.. members of her family say that she will have to re-learn how to walk. The mandatory minimum for his crime is 2 years in tax payer funded prison.
Court records show that ICE initially placed a hold on Chacin, but the hold was mysteriously lifted, and he was allowed to walk free. The lifting of this hold allowed him to allegedly drive his vehicle drunk and kill a child just a few short months later.
Ivory’s family released a statement honoring her, and mourning her death, but also blasting the immigration system for allowing such a dangerous person to walk free and unimpeded. Her family advocated for no bond, but nevertheless bond was set at $150,000 against their wishes.
