9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was given a plea deal by the Biden administration, one that even Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin attempted to reject. Courts however have ruled that Austin overstepped in overturning the deal.
Mohammed has been in U.S. custody for 21 years and 10 months. He was captured in 2003. Many have drawn criticism that Mohammad was not tried or executed sooner.
After months of back and fourth, the proceedings are back on track for a guilty plea hearing next week, 21 years late. Mohammad was reportedly tortured in military prison for years, having been waterboarded at least 183 times.
Mohammed was previously facing the death penalty, and will now likely get to live his days out in prison rather than face his creator. Now a military judge says that plea agreements with Mohammed and 2 other co-conspirators are valid.
