Herschel Walker, the former republican US Senate nominee and legendary college football player at the University of Georgia, was tapped by President Donald Trump to serve as the ambassador to the Bahamas.
Trump announced the nomination in a post on Truth Social late Tuesday night.
The Hall of Fame running back is best known for his storied career at the University of Georgia from 1980 to 1982. Walker would go on to win a Heisman, a national championship and compile many rushing records during his time in Athens.
Walker jumped into politics during the 2022 cycle, challenging incumbent Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock with Trump’s backing. Despite a Trump-esque level of name recognition in Georgia due to his storied college and NFL career, Walker ultimately fell short in the general election in a tough political climate for Republicans.
As a favored son of Georgia, Walker helped Trump flip the state during the 2024 Presidential election and many view this nomination as a reward for his hard work and success flipping the state red.
As an ambassador, Walker will need to have his nomination confirmed next year by the upcoming Senate. With Walker’s previous ties to sitting senators, many of whom campaigned in Georgia for Walker in 2022, and most importantly with Trump’s blessing, the nomination is expected to sail through.
