Wednesday, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The warrant accuses the pair of war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Ironically Israel is one of the only countries in the world, that during war time issues mass text messages and makes phone calls to warn civilians of bombings before they happen. Israel also provides more than 3,000 calories of food per person, per day to Gaza.
The court also issued a warrant for the Hamas Military Chief, Muhammad Deif, who has already been killed by an Israeli airstrike. The court claims that they cannot confirm his death.
This is how silly international bodies are, they issue arrest warrants for the leaders of a country engaged in a defensive war, and to put up the appearance of an even hand, also issue an arrest warrant for the already dead leader of the other side.
The warrant “obligates” certain countries under international law to arrest the pair if they travel to those specific countries. All though, this obligation carries virtually no consequences or incentive to do so.
International law, is virtually non-enforceable. Typically levies like sanctions and tariffs can be used to coerce nations to abide by international law. These sanctions however can be enacted independent of international law, with or without violation of it - making those laws virtually meaningless and nothing more than a rough guideline.
The only real method of enforcing international law is to occupy the country accusations are levied against and apprehend the leaders accused on their own soil. This very rarely happens, and because of this the only real claims that can be made, are claims from the winner of the war in question.
Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has announced that if Netanyahu or Gallant travel to Canada they will be arrested. Obviously however, the pair will simply not travel to Canada underscoring the ineffectiveness of the international body. 0
